Located just a short distance from Chania, Machairida Beach is situated approximately 14km northeast and 1km west of Chorafakia village, near Tersanas. Its name is thought to derive from the rocky cape at its northern end, which resembles a knife (“machairi” in Greek), or possibly from the Gladiolis italicus flower, also known as “macherida” in Greek.

The beach faces southwest, typically offering calm waters and features white sand surrounded by rugged rocks, creating a picturesque setting with turquoise waters. The sea remains crystal clear due to frequent changes in currents, maintaining the beach’s cleanliness. While not fully organized, some residences have been built near the beach in recent years.

Machairida is popular among nudists and is well-known in Chania’s LGBT community. The coastline is rich in wildlife, and the nearby Machairida pond, resembling a crater and located near the main road, hosts water snakes, turtles, and seagulls. A city bus route to Stavros passes through Tersanas and continues to Machairida Beach, providing convenient access for visitors.
