Location Description

This wonderful Kournas plot for sale is located above Lake Kournas on the north end of Chania prefecture in a small settlement named Mouri, almost in the middle between Chania (30 km to the east) and Rethymno (30 km to the west). From Kournas you can easily get to the highway (3 km) and visit Chania, the Omalos plateau, the Samaria Gorge (80 km), Fragokastelo and other places in Chania prefecture, or drive west and visit Rethymno with the impressive castle or Heraklion and Knossos (105 km), an important town in the antiquity.

Lake Kournas, 3 km from Georgioupolis, is the southern lake of whole of Europe. It is created thanks to the underground water coming down from the White Mountains and is trapped by the impervious rocks within the natural basin.

Lake Kournas is actually the only large natural lake in Crete and is located in an enchanting landscape, surrounded by high mountains and olive groves which constitute a very important ecosystem for Greece. Kournas is one of the very few areas of Crete where plenty of fresh water is stored throughout the year. For this reason, it is protected under the Natura 2000 program. It is a great destination for both winter and summer, a “painting” that adorns the prefecture of Chania.

Lake Kournas is a favorite destination for visitors of Crete and locals. It is an ideal place for relaxation and a walk. A stroll around the turquoise lake lasts less than an hour (3.5 km) in summer. On one side of the lake, there are cafes and restaurants overlooking the lake. Adjacent to the cafes, small beaches with white sand are formed during the summer, as the water surface reaches lower levels.

Visitors can swim at these beaches and rent umbrellas. Moreover, visitors could either pedal or kayak in the lake. This is an ideal choice for the afternoon when the colour of the water is beautiful and the lake is very calm.
