Falassarna (or Phalasarna) is located on the West coast of Crete, approximately 16km west of Kasteli and 45 km from Chania. Falassairna is little more than a blotch of habitations on a long sandy beach – but what a beach!
This broad sweep of pink-cream sand is considered among the world’s finest and is popular for its outstandingly clear teal waters, spectacular sunsets and rolling waves. Spread your towel on the Big Beach at the south end or pick a spot in one of the coves separated by rocky spits further north.
Nowadays, Falassarna is one of the most famous destinations in Crete, not only for its spectacular “Blue Flag” beaches, but also for the significant ecological interest it presents. Falassarna beach, has joined the European Network Natura 2000, because of its importance in the conservation and enhancement of natural beauty.
Especially in Falassarna, natural beauty is not just the visual appearance of the magnificent countryside, but it is also includes the flora, fauna, geological and physiographical characteristics of this unique area. Falassarna has no centre as such, although there are hotels and several tavernas, bars and small supermarkets.
Wander among Falasarna’s ancient ruins reached via a 2 km dirt road which starts where the paved road ends. The entrance is just past the ‘stone throne’. Further on there are the remains of the wall that once fortified the town and a small harbour.
Notice the holes carved into the wall, which were used to tie up boats. At the top of the hill there are the remains of the acropolis wall and a temple, as well as four clay baths.
The main beach of Falassarna is called Pachia Ammos and it is a magnificent beach with a length of 1km and a width of 150m. This beach attracts more visitors than most others in Crete. Yet, it has not lost its charm or its appeal or it never seems too crowded or too stressful mainly because of its length.
The beach offers umbrellas and a few snack bars and cafes where you can get food, snacks, drinks and water. There is another equally beautiful long beach north of the Pachia Ammos which is less organized and separated into several smaller, yet of exceptionally beautiful beaches. Nearby, there is the wonderful and picturesque chapel of Agia Paraskevi and a spring with fresh water.
With its sunny, sandy beaches, rich wildlife, archaeological sites, chapels and monasteries the area around Falassarna is a global tourist hot spot. The delectable Cretan cuisine and music festivals are all major tourist attractants in this part of Crete. However, the most spectacular here, is the sunset. Indeed, the sunset in Falasarna is sheer magic!
Kissamos exudes an unpolished, almost gritty, air compared to other north-coast towns and sea-side resorts near Chania. This is not a place given entirely over to tourism.
The only noise you hear is the song of the birds while you will admire the spectacular sea view during sunrise or sunset. Visitors can also enjoy the nearby magnificent beaches of Balos, Falassairna and Elafonisi and last but not least can admire and taste the authentic Cretan cuisine.
Kissamos is, after all, a small cosmos swarming with beauties and treasures that you will probably need a lifetime to discover!
