About Agia Marina

Agia Marina is one of the most popular places for a summer escape in Crete. The most northern point of Crete, the large island is surrounded by stunning blue waters and no end of gorgeous beaches. However, what people sometimes forget is that Agia Marina has just as much to offer travellers inland.

Agia Marina (and Chania) is home to some of the most beautiful sites in Crete, with cultural history, dramatic landscapes and a plethora of charming towns and villages scattered all over the island.

Some of Agia Marina’s locations are well known, such as the stunning beaches and the charming village of Pano Agia Marina. However, this area holds plenty of hidden gems, quiet communities that are perfect for experiencing the authentic Crete.

Experience the Authentic Cretan Way of Life

There is a unique culture of Agia Marina that sets it apart from anywhere else in Greece. From the cuisine to how they spend their time with family and their hospitality. There are many ways to discover this way of life, but exploring the lesser-travelled but equally stunning locations on the island is one of the best!

Here at ARENCORES, we’ve listed just some of our favourite towns and villages that provide the perfect day trip full of things to see and do, to help you have the holiday of a lifetime or identify a property that could be your home in Crete.

Agia Marina: A Heaven in Crete

Agia Marina is one of the best beach resorts in the island of Crete and is a very popular tourist destination just 10 km west from the picturesque city of Chania. Being a north coast resort it has a magnificent golden sandy and Blue Flag certified beach that seems to stretch infinitely.

Agia Marina is next to the similarly popular sea-side resort of Platanias and is very attractive for families and couples, thanks to its quiet charm and great facilities. Full of colour, warmth and charm, Agia Marina overflows with beauty and attractiveness.

One of Crete’s most popular sites, Agia Marina has become a must destination in recent years for those wishing to experience the beauty of Chania. The village of Agia Marina is famed for its abundant accommodation facilities, with a maze of alleys revealing new treasures at every turn, including an equally breath-taking surrounding landscape.

The inhabitants and sumptuous backdrops will leave you speechless. Agia Marina is perfect for lovers of unspoiled nature, beaches, history, sea , sun and blue skies and crystal clear water.

Pano Agia Marina

A short distance from the spectacular Agia Marina beach on approximately 500 m, the traditional village of Pano Agia Marina is settled. While it is still relatively unfrequented by tourists, Pano Agia Marina has a huge amount to offer.

Taking a stroll along the narrow streets of the village is an ideal way to step back from the crowds and experience a quieter and beautiful cultural side of this remarkable destination. Do not miss a visit to the village square, the lovely church of “St. Spiridon” and the Folklore museum.

However, to really get a feel for its old-world charm you should visit the churches of Agia Paraskevi and Saint John. While you are in this area ensure a magical hide way to the spectacular cave of Nerospilia with its rich decoration (it was a place of worship during the Middle Minoan period.).

Agia Marina Amenities

Agia Marina has an extensive selection of hotels and restaurants to suit all budgets and is increasingly playing host to popular cultural events.

Restaurants, cafes and lively bars delight visitors with a sublime mix of local cuisine, fine wine, tsikoudia and a memorable nightlife, while there are also many decadent guesthouses next to both modest and more luxurious hotels around the sea-side resort.

Agia Marina Beach

Just a short hop from the charming city of Chania, the genteel seaside resort of Agia Marina is very popular and largely overlooked by foreign tourists.

The village has a magnificent beach which has a sprinkling of cafes and a small fishing harbour, showers, ice-cream stalls, sun loungers and parasols for rent, calm and turquoise waters for swimming and snorkelling.

On the beach of Agia Marina where the blue sea meets the golden sand, hundreds of people enjoy swimming and sunbathing or having fun with a variety of water sports. However, if you don’t want the hustle and bustle of crowded beaches, then Agia Marina is not for you.

About Chania

With its world famous cuisine, fabulous history that dates back to the Minoan times, and unbeatable charm shared between the dramatic mountain peaks of the White Mountains, magnificent gorges, and miles of stunning coastline, Chania could easily be considered one of the most attractive, yet of exceptionally beauty regions in the world.

A stroll in the Old City with its pretty Venetian quarter and criss-crossed by narrow lanes is a like book on the history of architecture. Romans, Saracen Arabs, Byzantines, Venetians, Ottomans and Egyptians ruled and influenced the area from the 13th until the 19th century.

One of the best ways to soak up the essence of this beautiful corner in the Mediterranean Sea is to explore the charming, historic villages scattered along its coast or inside its enchanting, unspoilt countryside. Trek through Europe’s longest gorge, cycle among orchards on Apokoronas peninsula or enjoy swimming to exceptional Blue Flag beaches.

Chania is certainly the most picturesque seaside town in Crete.  With its exceptionally well preserved historic and architectural features, making the city unique and attractive for all visitors all year around.

However, step into the “inner Crete” – is a fascinating way to discover Crete’s authenticity, cultural traditions and the natural beauty of this magnificent location.
