Kournas Lake is the only freshwater lake on the island of Crete and the southernmost lake in Europe. This magnificent lake is located at the north edge of the White Mountains, approximately 4 km from Georgioupolis (42 km from the city of Chania), on the borders of Apokoronas.

The lake used to be called ‘Korisia’ originated from an ancient city named ‘Korion’, famous to the ancient times because of the sacred temple of Korisia Athena. Agios Georgios, Karidi

Apokoronas Property Guide - Agios Georgios Monastery

The monastery of Agios Georgios in Karidi is located about 2 km east of the picturesque village of Vamos and approximately 35 km from Chania. The monastery got its name from the settlement which existed at the site around 1600. It was founded in the early 17 (1860) century and the monks were graded by the Turks to run an olive oil factory.

The renovated monastery provides an information room with photographs and holds a well-preserved 500 year old silver icon. After being abandoned for many years, it finally was restored in 1996 and has been operating normally ever since. The olive oil factory had 12 extraordinary arches which are still standing to this day.

Almirida Beach

Almyrida beach is located 23 km east of the charming city of Chania, on the south shores of Souda Bay and just 1 km west of Plaka village. The plentiful sea caves, called Nerospilia, that are dispersed in the area constitute an unusual yet exceptional, natural phenomenon. Almirida has two wonderful sandy beaches, with shallow water, safe for children.

The two beaches are separated by a small rocky peninsula with a traditional white chapel. Almirida beach is very well organized and popular destination for water sports enthusiasts.

Georgioupoli Beach

Georgioupoli beach is a vast long beach (10 km) located 38km east of Chania and 21 km west of Rethymnon. Georgioupoli beach stretches 2 km to the east, starting from the river Almiros and ending in Kavros beach, which is a natural extension of the first beach.

Like all coastal front of the area, Georgioupoli beach is sandy with large dunes and shallow waters. It is very well organized with lifeguards and is ideal for children. However, if it is windy, high attention is required because of the sea currents.

Kalives Beach

Kalives beach is located just 1 km from Kalives, Apokoronas,19 km west of Chania, on the southern coast of Souda Bay. At the exit of the river Kiliaris, 1 km north of Kalives, is the tranquil beach of Kiani Akti. Near the village, on its east side, flow the rivers of Xidas and Mesopotamos.

East and west of the river Xidas, two sandy beaches with shallow waters are shaped, which are open to north winds. About Apokoronas

The Apokoronas extends from the foothills of the White Mountains north to the coast, in a wide plain with rolling hills. To the east, Cape Drapanon rises above the plain and extends out into the Sea of Crete. The area is very green and fertile, unusual for rocky Crete. The Kiliaris river, known in antiquity as ‘Pyknos’, runs through the region. Robert Pashley suggested that the name ‘Apokoronas’ came from the ancient city of Ippokoronas or Ippokoronion, also cited by Strabo. This city may have been located near modern Nipos, or on the site of the Venetian fortress, Castel Apicorono, on an outcrop between Kalyves and Almyrida. The major towns of Apokoronas are VamosArmenoi and Vryses, with police, municipal and utility offices as well as taverns and large churches; Kalyves, Almyrida and Georgioupoli are the largest beach resorts. Attracting visitors with its blend of small villages and low-key beach resorts, this district also boasts the island’s only freshwater lake.

The district capital Vamos, home to only 600 permanent residents, serves tourists exploring Crete’s northwestern coastline. Tourism and agriculture are the major local industries, with much construction and quarrying to satisfy the demands of many foreigners eager to buy or rent properties in what used to be beautiful and traditional villages. Gavalohori is among the more popular villages for foreign buyers, with a large amount of often low-quality building taking place. Many residents or workers in Chania also have homes in the area.
